If you've ever watched your child stare blankly at a number like 3,482 and wondered how something so "simple" could be so confusing — you're not alone. Place value is one of those concepts that adults use automatically but rarely stop to explain, and for a young child, it's genuinely abstract. Why does the same digit mean something different depending on where it sits in a number? Why is the 3 in 342 worth three hundred, not three?
Until a child can answer that question comfortably, a lot of math stays out of reach.
It's Not a "Topic" — It's the Operating System
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, money, even reading a phone number correctly — all of it runs on place value in the background. A child who has truly internalized that a digit's position changes its value isn't just prepared for a chapter test; they're building the number sense that carries them through years of math to come.
That's why gaps in place value tend to show up much later as "trouble with math" in general — when really, the missing piece is this one foundational idea that never got the hands-on time it needed.

Why Worksheets Alone Don't Always Get There
Place value is a spatial and structural concept, and spatial concepts are hard to teach with a flat page of numbers. A worksheet can tell a child that 4 tens equal 40 — but it can't let them build 40, take it apart, rebuild it as 3 tens and 10 ones, and see with their own hands that both are still 40.
That physical, repeatable practice is what actually makes the concept click — and it's exactly the gap we designed our Place Value Board to close.
Making an Abstract Idea Something Kids Can Touch
Our double-sided dry erase board gives children two ways to work with the same number:
- Side one — write a number, then shade in the matching hundred flats, ten rods, and unit cubes to build it visually.
- Side two — flip over and break the same number down across standard, expanded, word, and short word forms, so the connections between them stop feeling like separate rules to memorize.
Because it's dry erase and reusable over a thousand times, there's no pile of worksheets to print or correct — just wipe, write a new number, and go again. That repetition, at their own pace, is what turns a confusing idea into an obvious one.
A Few Ways to Use It at Home
Let your child shade the blocks first before asking them to write the expanded form — seeing always comes before symbols.
There's no need to rush both sides in one sitting; many families find it works best to master the blocks before tackling the number forms.
Rather than a big sit-down lesson, try a number a day, wiped and repeated — it builds fluency faster than occasional long sessions.
Place value doesn't need to be a wall your child hits in Grade 1 or 2. With the right hands-on tool and a little consistent practice, it becomes something they simply understand — and everything built on top of it gets easier from there.
